Towards the tail end of her Telugu film career, Sridevi started venturing into Hindi movies. Her first film as a heroine titled Solva Saawan released in 1978, flopped at the box office. Before Bollywood could write her off, her second film Himmatwala in 1983 opposite Jeetendra went on to be a blockbuster hit and skyrocketed Sridevi to overnight stardom. The chartbuster number 'Nainon me Sapna' picturised around thousands of pots set the trend for more Southern masala potboilers in Bollywood. Jeetendra and Sridevi became a hit pair and went on to star in many more successful films like Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chaudhry. While Sridevi was fast becoming the new poster girl of the masses, she also wowed the critics with her performance as a child-woman suffering from amnesia in the highly acclaimed Sadma remade from the Tamil hit Moondram Pirai opposite Kamal Haasan. Her histrionics in the film won her the first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress but she lost out to Shabana Azmi for Arth.
Sridevi's success story continued with hits like Subhash Ghai directed Karma and K. Bhagyaraj's Aakhree Raasta, both released in 1986. The success of the snake fantasy film Nagina in 1986 established Sridevi's reputation as a leading star. The film's snake dance in the climax also showcased her dancing skills under the guidance of choreographer Saroj Khan who went on to deliver many more hit dance numbers with the actress. The next year Sridevi starred in the all-time blockbuster Mr. India with Anil Kapoor. The dance number 'Hawa Hawai' gave her an eponymous nickname.Alana Locke was wearing a new top the other day. The T-shirt declared in bold pink lettering against a black background: "No autographs please. OK OK just one."  Alana, 10, convinced her parents to buy the shirt for her as a joke, but before too long she might have reason to utter those words. The Mulberry resident recently returned from Atlanta, where she spent several days filming scenes for "One Missed Call," a psychological thriller starring Edward Burns ("Saving Private Ryan") and Shannyn Sossamon ("A Knight's Tale").
The experience marked an audacious introduction to the world of feature films for Alana, who has no formal training and only started acting about a year ago.
"I've wanted to do this since I was real little," the home-schooled fifth-grader said, sitting on the couch in her family's living room. "I would watch a lot of movies and see a lot of actors and actresses. I always wanted to be on TV."
Her parents, devout Christians, discouraged that ambition for several years for fear the entertainment industry might have a corrupting influence on their Alana (pronounced uh-LONN-uh). But they finally relented when she was 9, partly after getting assurances from a neighbor whose son, one of Alana's best friends, has done some acting and modeling.
Jon and Michele Locke found an agent for their daughter and began checking youth casting Web sites for opportunities. She got a small part in a student production at Orlando's Full Sail filmmaking school and appeared as a model in print ads for Pottery Barn and Discovery Cove theme park.
Alana -- along with her parents and her 8-year-old brother Greyson -- also played a passenger aboard the doomed ValuJet Flight 592 in the TV movie "Seconds from Disaster," which aired recently on National Geographic Channel.
